General Aviation Forecast (GAFOR)
|
Some of the navigation programs I like to use — Garmin Pilot and Jeppesen VFR FlightDeck — do not have an integrated tool for showing the European Alpine VFR Routes ("bad weather routes") which are also the basis for General Aviation Weather Forecasts (GAFOR) in Austria, Switzerland, Croatia and Slovenia.
I have used Google Earth to create KML-Files that capture the published routes as closely as possible. When used in the 500-ft-elevation-version with the fly-by-mode on google maps, they can be used to familiarize oneself with the visuals of an intended future flight. The KML-Files for different routes are combined to two KMZ Shape files (virtual folder; one set at ground level, one at 500ft) that can be imported to Garmin Pilot ® and to Google Earth.
